Kanchanpur: A severe cold wave, accompanied by dense fog, has disrupted daily life in Kailali and Kanchanpur districts of Sudurpaschim Province over the past few days. The harsh weather has significantly affected vulnerable populations, including children, the elderly, and those with financial difficulties.
School-going children are experiencing health issues such as fever, colds, and stomach aches due to the extreme cold. Similarly, elderly individuals are struggling with respiratory problems. Those living in inadequate housing, such as huts or makeshift shelters, are enduring the cold with limited clothing and resources.
Mandhwoj Luhar, a resident of the Banhara camp, described the severe challenges they face. "It’s unbearable to walk around because of the chill. At night, dew seeps through our leaky tarpaulin roof, and we have very few clothes to stay warm," Luhar said, adding that he spends his nights keeping a fire burning to stay warm. The tarpaulin sheets they rely on were provided by a donor agency, but no additional aid has reached the camp in two years.
For others, the cold and fog have disrupted work and livelihoods. Manoj Chaudhari, who transports materials from the Mahakali River, said he avoids working in the early mornings due to the low visibility caused by thick fog. "It’s too risky to work in the fog, so I only drive the tractor during the day," he explained.
The cold wave has also taken a toll on agriculture. Local farmers have reported damage to crops, with potatoes showing signs of blight due to the prolonged cold and damp conditions.
Health facilities in the region are seeing a surge in patients. Durga Datt Bhatt, chief of Pipaladi Health Post, reported a significant increase in the number of people seeking treatment for cold-related illnesses.
The adverse weather conditions continue to pose significant challenges for residents, highlighting the urgent need for relief and support in the affected areas.
